Farmhands Summer 2016 Program Schedule

We are excited to announce this year’s line-up of summer programming!  Summer provides the richest time period for experiential learning on the farm and ranch. Whether your child wants to dig into the garden or learn about how animals live on a ranch we’ve got a program which provides the perfect mix of fun and hands-on learning opportunities. We offer programs at a variety of sites which embrace the abundant natural beauty and resources of the Upper Arkansas Valley. Each of our programs blend exploration, arts, crafts, science and nature in the context of local agriculture. We are excited to once again share our summer days with your children on the farm and ranch and we hope you are as excited about this summer’s programs as we are.

JUNE

Moonstone Farm Camp, May 31-June 2
Age: 5-7 year olds
Time: 9 am-12 pm daily
Location: Moonstone Farm, Salida

Cost: $66
Kick off the summer with 3 days of fun and adventure at Moonstone Farm, located in the heart of Salida, on the banks of the south Arkansas River.  We’ll spend our days digging in the dirt, exploring the role of nature in our daily lives and the interaction with the food we eat, tending to the animals, making and eating farm food, playing games, participating in fun crafts, sharing stories, making new friends, and having fun in a beautiful outdoor setting! To register, click HERE.

Homestead Explorers: The Ranch & Its Animal Inhabitants, June 8
Age: 5-7 year olds
Time: 9:30am – 3:30pm
Location: Hutchinson Homestead & Learning Center, Salida

Cost: $44
Have you ever wanted to be a cowboy or a cowgirl, working and living on a ranch? Well here’s your chance to see what life on a working cattle ranch is all about! One of the most important jobs for ranchers is to care for the animals they raise.  Meet some of the Hutchinson Ranch’s resident ranch animals and learn about their roles on a ranch.  Along the way, we will also explore for signs of some of the wildlife that also calls the ranch their home! To register, click HERE.

Animals on the Ranch, June 14-16
Age: 8-11 year olds
Time: 9:30am-3:30pm daily
Location: Hutchinson Homestead & Learning Center, Salida

If you love farm animals, this camp is for you! Get up close and personal as we spend three days studying the animals that are raised on a ranch: beef and dairy cattle as well as other meat, milk, egg or yarn producers like goats, sheep, llamas, rabbits and pigs. We’ll learn about the care, feeding, and different varieties of these animals, and the agricultural role they play, through people who raise and care for them: ranchers, veterinarians and more. Longfellow Junior Gardeners I, June 20-23
Age: 6-10 year olds
Time: 9 am-12 pm daily
Location: Longfellow Elementary School,  Salida

Awaken your sense of what it takes to grow food through fun, hands-on, educational opportunities. Learn more about where food comes from and how local foods are grown, while assisting with projects that will help get the Salida School gardens going for the 2016 growing season! Throughout the week, Jr. Gardeners will be introduced to and explore a variety of garden concepts and activities, and each day will build on those experiences to create a depth of learning over the 3 days. Topics and activities throughout the week will include seed planting and garden bed prep, pollinators, good and bad bugs,  nutrition, cooking, seed and plant ecology, soil studies, garden arts/crafts, and journaling. To register, click HERE.

Meadows Farm Camp I, June 28-30
Age: 5-12 year olds

Location: Meadows Farm, Buena Vista

Our first Meadows Farm Camp of the season is specifically designed for our older campers who are ready to take on more challenges and learning opportunities. During this camp, which takes place at both the Meadows and Weathervane Farms in Buena Vista, we will offer three adventurous days and first-hand experiences with agriculture! Whether you have joined us at previous programs or are new, this camp is sure to provide engaging and experiential opportunities to learn about the people, animals and plants who live on these farms all woven into 3 days of nature-based activities. To register, click HERE.

Homestead Explorers: Artifacts & the Stories They Tell, June 29
Age: 5-7 yr olds
Time: 9:30am – 3:30pm

Have you ever dreamed of being an archeologist? Or a detective?! The Hutchinson Homestead is home to many artifacts and clues that tell the story of what life was like on a homestead and ranch over 100 years ago. Join us for a day of exploring these historic items and what we can learn about the people who lived and worked here, and maybe even discover some new hidden artifacts! To register, click HERE.


JULY

Ranch Camp, July 5-7
Age: 8-11 year olds

Become a Junior Rancher! Have you participated in Hutchinson Homestead programs before and are ready for something more?  Join us for three days going more in depth into rancher skills and tasks.  As we practice important ranch skills like roping, irrigating, and pasture management, we’ll help make the tools we’d need for the trade, help Rancher Abby complete a ranch project, learn how to care for cows and horses and more. At the end of camp, we’ll celebrate with a square dance for campers and their families. To Register, Click HERE.

Homestead Explorers: Traditional Arts, July 12
Age: 5-7 yr olds
Time: 9:30am – 3:30pm
Location: Hutchinson Homestead & Learning Center, Salida

Cost: $44
Be an artist, homesteader-style! Traditional arts are skills that were once a necessary part of daily life on a homestead, and a meaningful way to connect to place and home. Food, clothing, home needs and even toys all needed to be made by hand. Join in to try your hand at a few of these skills, including butter making, felting and candle-making with beeswax. To register, click HERE.

Meadows Farm Camp II, July 19-21
Age: 5-12 year olds
Time: 9:30-3:30 daily
Location: Meadows Farm, Buena Vista

Cost: $132
The second Meadows Farm Camp of the season is specifically designed for the younger campers and takes place at the Meadows and Weathervane Farm in Buena Vista. The camp offers three adventurous days and first-hand experiences with agriculture! We’ll meet real-life farmers, learn where our food comes from, and we’ll help them to care for their vegetable gardens as well as for the chickens, sheep and goats that live on the farm.   Through hands-on activities, farm chores, crafts, games, songs and explorations, we’ll investigate the daily life of a farmer and discover how soil, water, sunshine, plants, animals and people work together to grow a variety of foods. Pioneer Camp, July 19-21
Age: 8-11 year olds

Location: Hutchinson Homestead & Learning Center, Salida

Step into the past and experience the homestead as a pioneer! Pioneers had to be resourceful and hand-make many of the things they needed for daily life.  Leatherwork, sewing, food preservation, needs for the home, tools and even toys and games had to be made by hand.  Join us in this hands-on experience of life in the past. As we step into the footsteps of the many people who have lived and worked at the Hutchinson Homestead, we’ll imagine life on a homestead with the eyes and ears of many different perspectives, sharing our experiences in a homemade journal.  Experience history on a ranch in a whole new way! To register, click HERE.

Walking In Their Footsteps: Utes, Pioneers & Homesteaders, July 26

Age: 5-7 yr olds
Time: 9:30am – 3:30pm

Step into the past and walk in the footsteps of the people that have lived and worked on the homestead!  Building homesteads, gathering and preserving food, hand-washing clothes and caring for the pastures are all ways we’ll role-play to experience life in the past at the Hutchinson Homestead! To register, click HERE.

AUGUST

Longfellow Junior Gardeners II, August 1-4
Age: 6-10 year olds
Time: 9 am- 12 pm
Location: Longfellow Elementary School, Salida

Build on the skills learned in Longfellow Junior Gardeners I, see the progression of the crops, and help in the care and harvest of produce. Participants will have fun, hands-on, educational opportunities to learn more about where food comes from and how local foods are grown. Throughout the week, students will be introduced to and explore a variety of garden concepts and activities, and each day will build on those experiences to create a depth of learning over the 3 days.
